iThemes and Liquid Web acquire popular Restrict Content Pro plugin

"It occurred to me that selling Restrict Content Pro could allow us to narrow our focus, increase our development, support, and marketing resources on our other products, and to significantly insulate our team from downturns by putting more cash in the bank," he Pippin.

As part of the product-only deal, no members of the Sandhills team will be moving to iThemes. There's a multi-month transition plan in place and iThemes will be honoring existing licenses.
|
According to Brian, while the sale price hasn't been disclosed, it's "a seven-figure deal, likely somewhere between two and four times annual revenue."
|
For iThemes, the acquisition is a move away from the company's existing backend, utility-based products. "Now they get to not be just peace of mind to their customers, but an aid to helping customers actually make money," Brian explains.

And MotoPress has acquired the Gutenix WordPress Theme. Sarah Gooding reports MotoPress, a theme and plugin shop in operation since 2013, has acquired the Gutenix WordPress theme and its commercial ZeGuten blocks plugin for Gutenberg. The free theme has more than 700 active installs after nine months in the WordPress.org repository.

Yoast owners take stake in fellow Dutch company

That's right, Yoast owners Joost de Valk and Marieke van de Rakt have taken a stake in WordProof, the startup that recently won first place and €1 million in the European Commission's "Blockchains for social good" competition.
|
The deal gives WordProof access to the SEO plugin's 10-million strong user base and allows the two Dutch companies to offer timestamping content on the internet combined with search engine optimization.

In Founders Yoast SEO take a stake in WordProof to push timestamp relevance for SEO results, Joost says: "From a publishing perspective, the ability to prove authorship, to unequivocally prove that you were first with a specific piece of content, is game-changing. With WordProof, unprecedented integrity can be brought to the world of content publishing and e-commerce in an open-source manner, which creates awesome opportunities for social sharing sites and search engines."

WordProof was founded in 2019 by Sebastiaan van der Lans. According to the company's bio, WordProof is on a mission to restore trust in the internet because fraud and fake news have made it unreliable. The WordProof Timestamp Ecosystem enables users and search engines to verify the source of content.

Musicians wanted for WordCamp Austin

WordCamp Austin 2020 organizers have put out a call for musicians. Sarah Gooding reports in WordCamp Austin Opens Call for Musicians on WP Tavern that the event's organizers are "rising to the challenge of creating a unique experience for attendees, while working within the constraints of a virtual format."

Musicians from anywhere in the world are invited to send an audition video (or schedule a live audition) for the opportunity to perform 2-5 songs between sessions. "Me, sitting at my computer, refreshing the musician submission form, waiting for all of y'all with musical talents to apply," tweets WordCamp Austin.

WordPress 5.5.1 fixes "million of broken sites"

The WordPress 5.5.1 Maintenance Release is now available. It features 34 bug fixes, five enhancements, and five bug fixes for the block editor. If you've got automatic background updates enabled on your sites, they've probably already updated.

- – Users of the free File Manager plugin — available in the WordPress.org repository — are being urged to update to the latest version after a zero-day vulnerability was patched this week. Sucuri threat researcher Antony Garand says 700,000 WordPress sites have been impacted by the critical flaw, which allows malicious users to gain complete access to a site. Wordfence security analyst Chloe Chamberland says the vulnerability is being actively exploited in the wild.
- – Several WordPress companies are continuing to offer paid positions to those wanting to work on WordPress core full-time, notes Brian Krogsgard in the latest Post Status newsletter. WPBeginner recently announced it's hiring WordPress developers to work primarily on core, while Yoast recently welcomed two new core contributors, Documentation Team member Justin Ahinon and Themes Teams rep Ari Stathopoulos.
