Would have been nice if WordPress could have consulted the Accessibility Team before making this public. There are a few issues that could have been resolved to make things work better for all users. I do not want to speak for the whole team, but I know I was never asked. What a shame. Open source is still refusing to get with the times of diversity and inclusion fully. To exclude people with disabilities is in fact discrimination. It is time things start changing. To anyone who worked on this project, nice work. Just wish the site was more accessible for all. Not everyone who is blind operates with a developer-level skillset. I will now figure out where to go report these accessibility issues. The project is now split between https://lnkd.in/gQ4XxQSC and https://lnkd.in/gRCK_Fn2. It can be a challenge figuring out where to submit feedback. For the record, I am all for GitHub. It is much more accessible than TRAC or at least the version of TRAC WordPress is running for contributors. One more note, I have no idea where a re-design was even discussed. This is the official Openverse, Meta, and Design Teams sites, nothing. - https://lnkd.in/gQy_JpkJ - https://lnkd.in/gUEJKRTE - https://lnkd.in/geJ_kYKQ #accessibility #diversityandinclusion #wordpress #opensource

Created the first tracking issue. Hopefully this will be addressed promptly. https://github.com/WordPress/openverse-frontend/issues/2173 I will have more issues to open for other parts of the site but that should be a good start. In the future, I hope our teams can work better together to not allow this to keep happening.

Hey Alex. I'll follow up with you on the WordPress slack install and connect you with folks who have worked on this project. Let's make it as easy as possible to report things and get some clarity there. For now, I'd recommend opening issues in this repo specific to the website: https://github.com/WordPress/openverse-frontend As for where this was discussed, there's a Make blog dedicated to Openverse here: https://make.wordpress.org/openverse/ You can see some mentions of a redesign here: https://make.wordpress.org/design/2021/12/17/redesign-of-openverse/ as well as posts related to the site effort on the Make blog itself! Hope this helps connect some dots.

Well-said Alex. I didn't know there had been a re-design. I don't use Wordpress (well I do for some online articles I write, and then are published...) but I'm considering moving off Medium to Substack from issues in accessibility. :(
