The road ahead

"It is shaping up to be an exciting year thus far," writes Justin Tadlock from WP Tavern, who unpacks what’s planned for WordPress this year in The Road Ahead: What’s in Store for WordPress for the Rest of 2020?

After several years of relatively little change, there’s a lot coming up: full-site editing, automatic theme and plugin updates, global styles, block directly integration, lazy loading, and more. But is it too much? Justin raises concerns about full-side editing, writing: "Aside from the introduction of the block editor itself, this will be one of the largest changes to how WordPress works in its history… It needs time to age before it’s dropped into the laps of end-users and developers alike. I will be the first to jump for joy if I am wrong."

Overall, readers say Gutenberg is too much too soon, particularly for novice users. As TRG Web Designs founder Tom Greer comments:
"As a website designer who works with clients all day, every day, I can tell you that the Block Editor is already over-featured, confusing and frustrating for the average user. All they want is to be able to add content quickly and easily."

Meanwhile, over at Speckyboy, Eric Karkovack asks Is the Future of WordPress Code-Free? On Twitter, designer Robert Hacala sums up where users are at (and have been for a while now): "Yeah, I’ve been using the Divi theme from @elegantthemes for a while now. Absolutely love it!"

In other news, the WordPress 5.5 releases cycle has kicked off with WordPress executive director Josepha Haden putting a call out for tickets.

    What’s new in Gutenturd

Also at WP Tavern, Justin takes a look at how Gutenberg 7.9 Adds Gradients to More Blocks, Extra Typography Controls, and New Patterns. He acknowledges, "For Gutenberg junkies, the three-week wait between major releases has been rough," adding that with the added time, 7.9 is a larger release than usual and includes over two dozen bug fixes and almost as many minor enhancements.

Automatic engineer and core contributor Andrés has published a full (and long) list of What’s new in Gutenberg.

Meanwhile, next time you’re thinking about commenting on a WP Tavern story… "Thinking of building a Gutenberg_dangit() filter that turns "Gutenturd" into "Gutenberg" on Tavern comments," tweets Justin. "PRs welcome?" asks the team behind Elegant Modules.

    Behind the scenes

"I’m sharing an incredibly personal story of my hardest moments from 15 years an entrepreneur. And, a moment of validation, recognition of value that changed my life & outlook forever. Seriously it would mean a lot if you would join me: https://wpfeedback.co/summit/ Thank you friends x" tweets Paul Lacey, co-founder and CEO of The Dickiebirds Studio.

He’s referring to the WP FeedBack virtual summit, a free online event from 27 April to 1 May. Over 20 pros will share their experiences and advice when it comes to running a WordPress business.

Virtual WordPress Meetups have become the new normal, as Justin Tadlock writes in State of the Meetup Under Lockdown for WP Tavern. Other online events coming up include The JavaScript for WordPress Conference and, of course, WordCamp Europe.

"Now that #WCEU is cancelled I've got a new problem... I need to buy t-shirts this year, I haven't done that in ages. All my t-shirts are swag from WordCamps 🤣," tweets Kirki Customizer Framework developer Ari Stathopoulos. ICYMI last week, Ari's selling his popular plugin, tweeting "it's grown beyond me."

    Plugin madness

"After 6 weeks of voting, Elementor is crowned Plugin Madness Champion! King of plugins 2 years in a row & it's thanks to YOU. This is everyones win!! PS - @torque let me know where to send our address. We prepared a sweet spot for our trophy," tweets the team behind Elementor. They’re referring to Torque Magazine’s annual Plugin Madness competition, which pits the best and most popular plugins against each other.

"The winner was obvious even before the voting had begun— 4+ million active websites are getting schwifty up in here," tweets [email protected].
