Better than nothing: WordPress claims top spot in W3Techs ranking

"NEW: Today WordPress claimed top spot in @W3Techs ranking of content management systems, finally moving ahead of 'None'. Or rather, 'None we could identify' - which isn't quite the same," tweets former WordPress VIP Director of Platform Services Simon Dickson. He links to his post, WordPress is now the undisputed leader in content management.
W3Techs's latest usage statistics of content management systems show WordPress now powers 39.0% of all websites, just 0.2% more than "None." Shopify, in third place, doesn't even come close with 3.1%, followed by Joomla (2.2%) and Drupal (1.5%).

As Simon suggests, "… perhaps a more interesting number to look towards is 51%, an explicit objective for WordPress co-founder Matt Mullenweg for many years." Matt mentioned his 51% goal back in 2015 when he announced Automattic had acquired WooCommerce and WordPress had just 23% CMS market share.

Simon also posits, "50% doesn't seem as far away, or as fanciful as it once did… and perhaps we should be thinking more about its implications."

"I feel data (in this case, even the massive market share) is nothing without a key to interpret it and a vision to guide it. Thanks Simon for adding context," tweets Yoast's WordPress Core Team Lead Francesca Marano, who's also a WordPress Core Team rep.

Simon also tweets: "My former colleague @ChrisHardie can open his merch store now." He links to software developer and entrepreneur Chris Hardie's anticipatory tweet from 26 October: "I have my "WordPress is Better Than Nothing" shirts and hats printed and all ready to go."

WordPress the CMS of choice for election websites

President-elect Joe Biden wasn't the only winner to come out of last week's presidential and congressional elections, according to plugin company PublishPress. WordPress powered almost every contest in the U.S. elections, from the presidency to Senate and House seats.

Both Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris's campaign sites used WordPress. The Biden-Harris transition website has also launched on WordPress, reports WPTavern's Sarah Gooding.

Interestingly, as PublishPress points out, one of the few sites that didn't use WordPress, President Donald Trump's campaign website, was hacked and defaced. It runs on Expression Engine. Mark Maunder, founder and CEO of Defiant, which does business as Wordfence, has published an analysis of the Trump campaign hacking and the lessons learned.

WooCommerce users urged to update after vulnerability patched

While we're on the topic of hacking, WooCommerce has patched a security vulnerability that allowed spam bots to create accounts at checkout, reports Sarah Gooding for WPTavern. WooCommerce 4.6.2 was released last week to fix the vulnerability.

According to Sarah, the WooCommerce team discovered the security flaw after several dozen users reported their sites were receiving spam orders, or "failed orders" where the payment details were fake.

In other security news, Wordfence threat analyst Chloe Chamberland has warned of critical privilege escalation vulnerabilities affecting 100,000 sites using the Ultimate Member Plugin, while threat analyst Ram Gall, also of Wordfence, has urged the 20,000 users of the Welcart e-Commerce plugin to update to the latest version after an object injection vulnerability was recently patched.

WordPress Diversity Team offering free public speaking workshops

WordCamp Central has put a call out for people in under-represented groups in tech who are considering speaking at a WordPress Meetup or WordCamp. The WordPress Diversity Team will be running intermediate public speaking online workshops on 17-19 November 2020 at 6pm UTC.

"Workshops next week! Includes a popularly requested new workshop: 'Story-telling for tech talks'," tweets Diversity Team Speaker Training Lead Jill Binder. "I am so excited about these workshops, and you should be too! Bonus: they are all free to attend 🥳 #WPDiversity," tweets Angela Jin, a community builder for WordPress, sponsored by Automattic.

Envato hits $1 billion in community earnings after 14 years in business

Envato has passed $1 billion in community earnings since the company was founded in 2006. Former CEO Collis Ta'eed (now a chairperson) announced the incredible milestone in the Envato Forums this week. He says more than 81,000 creatives from nearly every country and territory in the world have earned money with Envato. "To this day, we're very proud that our community earns more money than our company does," Collis writes.

Envato is, of course, home to ThemeForest, the largest marketplace for WordPress themes. Many theme developers and businesses operate exclusively using ThemeForest, including ThemeFusion, the company behind the hugely popular Avada theme.

Avada is the best selling theme for WordPress and has been for several years now. According to ThemeFusion, Avada surpassed $25 million in total sales in July 2018 — a mind-blowing feat for a WordPress theme.

Sarah Gooding reports on the $1 billion milestone for WPTavern — and her take is a critical one. She says Envato's focus on driving projects through Envato Elements, its subscription service, has alienated authors who believe the company is poaching clients from existing marketplaces.

Collis stepped down as CEO last month, handing the reins to Hichame Assi, the former chief executive of HotelsCombined.com, reports SmartCompany editor Eloise Keating. Collis told the business publication he knew the time was right for him to leave the company he co-founded when Envato hit $1 billion in community earnings.
