WP Community Collective Incorporates as Nonprofit to Further Support Contributions to WordPress

The newly-minted board, headed by President and CEO Sé Reed, announced this week that the incorporation marks a new chapter in the organization’s commitment to supporting the people and projects that make up the WordPress and open source communities.

The WP Community Collective (WPCC) has officially incorporated as a California membership nonprofit, taking a significant step toward its mission of breaking down financial and logistical barriers to contributing to WordPress.

The newly-minted board, headed by President and CEO Sé Reed, announced this week that the incorporation marks a new chapter in the organization’s commitment to supporting the people and projects that make up the WordPress and open source communities.

“A lot is said about (and to) the #WordPress community. But for the most part, the community has been spoken for and not had a voice of its own. That’s why we founded @thewpcc! Join us and be part of the community conversation!” posted Reed on X.

Founded in 2022, the WPCC was created to give the WordPress community a voice and help fund individual WordPress contributors and community-led initiatives. The new membership structure makes it easier for individuals and organizations to support the WPCC’s work.

Individuals can join by contributing at least $5, giving them access to a Slack space where members can discuss ideas and help drive the WPCC’s growth. In 2025, the WPCC plans to introduce business and organization membership tiers, along with scholarship memberships.

The WPCC is finalizing its U.S. Federal designation as a 501(c)(6) nonprofit organization. It is also creating a charitable nonprofit subsidiary to focus on projects related to accessibility and education, as per its goal to assist WordPress contributors financially. This includes its Accessibility Fellowship and the Incentivizing DEIB in WP program.

“This structure gives us more flexibility with projects and funding, and it helps us better support and advocate for individuals, businesses, and organizations in the WordPress and open source communities,” the board explained in

The original board remains intact, with updated titles to reflect the new structure. In addition to Reed serving as President and CEO, Katie Adams Farrel has taken on the Treasurer/Secretary role, and Courtney Robertson is a board member at large.

In 2023, the WPCC sponsored long-time accessibility contributor Alex Stine, helping him take on a team lead role with the WordPress Accessibility Team.

Earlier this year, the WPCC teamed up with GoDaddy to launch a new program aimed at helping underrepresented speakers get to regional and flagship WordCamps.

The WPCC’s move away from fiscal hosting under the Open Collective Foundation (OCF), a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit, comes after the OCF announced its dissolution earlier this year. The new nonprofit structure allows the WPCC to manage funds more effectively, and the organization remains committed to transparency, with all financial data available on the Open Collective website.

You can join as a founding member of the WP Community Collective on the Open Collective website.
